ABSTRACT
Key words: Physical Education, Quality, Switzerland, Standards, Implementation Upon request by the Swiss Government, the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport has devel- oped a comprehensive and easy to use product which can be used to examine the quality of physical education at all learning levels. The product has four constituent parts. The first of these is a cyclical scheme displaying the main steps necessary for the undertaking of an effective quality improvement process, followed by a model that reduces the complexity of physical education, and thus helps to identify the key criteria that can influence quality. Thirdly, a specific system is used to examine quality by attaching a set of indicators to the criteria that facilitate recognition and measurement through the use of appropriate tools. The last part consists of a vast collection of applicable feedback and measurement tools, which can be used by schools for more general lessons, as well as for physical education. Using this product, the Swiss Federal Institute of Sport has defined a number of criteria and competences that can be used to discuss 'performance', 'content', and 'opportunity to learn' standards for physical education in Switzerland. The final topic presented deals with problems that have occurred during the implementation of the product within Switzerland, which is one of the most decentralised nations in the world.
